Chow chow what? flirting with a Bangalore staple

January 27, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

Food is surely one of the highlights of my return to India.  I was in Bangalore for a board meeting on Tuesday. Had to stop for a local staple for breakfast: chow chow bhaat.  Literally it means nothing but it connotes a delectable juxtaposition of sweet and savory renditions of cracked wheat pudding.   The idea is to alternate the spicy ‘upma’ with sweetened ‘sheera.’ Available everywhere for about INR 25 (50 cents).

Recommended chaser: ‘Kapi’ a milky south Indian slow brewed coffee with an occasional hint of chicory.
